Chicago Keeps Rolling With 8-1 Win Over Wisconsin-Whitewater

From University of Chicago Athletics

Stellar singles play helped the University of Chicago men's tennis team keep their unblemished record intact with a dominating 8-1 win over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday.

The No. 6-ranked Maroons moved to 5-0 on the season with three victories over nationally-ranked opposition. The No. 26-ranked Warhawks fell to 2-3.

UChicago found itself up 2-1 after doubles. The No. 2 tandem (sophomore Peter Leung/freshman Charlie Pei) and the No. 3 pairing (senior Gordon Zhang/sophomore Luke Tsai) provided the two wins.

Once singles rolled around afterwards, the Maroons focused in and seized control of proceedings for good. The hosts swept all six singles spots, with five coming in straight sets. The day's singles winners included sophomore Nicolas Chua, Pei, Leung, Tsai, sophomore David Liu and freshman Max Liu in the lineup order. So far this year, UChicago has won 26 out of 30 singles matches in dual meets.

"I was really happy with how we finished today," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "Yesterday we got off to a hot start in doubles and the first sets in singles, but then didn't put the pedal down like I know we are able. Today was much better in the sense that when our opportunities arose, we took them and didn't let our opponents back in matches. Overall, we are very happy to have had this weekend of matches so we can have some very productive practices the next two weeks before we head to indoor nationals."
