The University of Rochester men's tennis team picked up a key regional victory on Wednesday, topping Hobart College 6-3 on the road at Bristol Field House.
UR had two double-winners on the day in senior captain Ben Shapiro and sophomore Andrew Nunno. The two wins move Shapiro into 10th place all-time in combined wins at Rochester with 113 in his career, including 61 in doubles.
Shapiro and Nunno combined to earn a 9-7 victory at 2nd doubles for Rochester (8-7), breaking a 1-1 tie in the overall match beating Jonah Salita and Jonathan Atwater. The tie came after UR's #1 pair of Aaron Mevorach andn Masaru Fujimaki won 8-6 over Michael Rusk and Danny Kot of Hobart. At 3rd doubles, HC's Harry Nichols and Patrick Gray won by that same 8-6 score over Rochester's Ian Baranowski and Kevin Hunt.
In singles, Nichols picked up the first point at #4, winning 6-3, 6-4 over Mevorach to even the match at 2-2. Shortly after, Baranowski won 6-4, 6-4 over Atwater at #3 for his 54th career singles win. That win moves the senior into a tie for 7th place all-time in wins at Rochester with 116, matching the total from Alex Gaeta '83.
Hobart (6-6) again responded with a win to pull even at 3-3. Salita defeated Fujimaki at the top spot by a 6-4, 6-3 score.
After UR's Sam Leeman won 7-5, 7-5 over Gray at the 5th spot in the lineup, Shapiro won the clincher with a three-set win over Rusk at #2. The UR senior dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied with 6-4, 6-1 wins to claim the point and seal the fifth straight victory for the Yellowjackets. Shapiro has been a double-winner in all five of those UR wins.
Rounding out the match was Nunno against Kot at the #6 spot. Nunno would win in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 10-5 to reach the final score of 6-3.
