From University of Rochester Athletics
On senior day, the University of Rochester men's tennis team claimed its sixth consecutive victory, this one a 6-3 victory over NYU. The Yellowjackets improve to 9-7 overall on the season. NYU came into the match ranked #14 regionally and Rochester was #17 in the current regional poll.
Ben Shapiro capped off his senior day by winning the clinching point in his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Umberto Setter at #2 singles. He was one of three double winners for the Yellowjackets. He paired with Andy Nunno to win, 8-4, at second doubles over Setter and Shrikar Kundar. Nunno was a 6-2, 7-5 winner against Yanik Parsch at #6 singles.
The third double-winner was Masaru Fukimaki. He paired with Aaron Mevorach to defeat Sammy Aronson and Sidd Thangirala, 8-4, at #1 doubles. Fujimaki posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Thangirala at #1 singles.
NYU claimed the first team point of the day when Benedict Teoh and Matt DiMichiel won, 8-3, against Ian Baranowski and Kevin Hunt at third doubles. Shaprio/Nunno evened the score at 1-1 with their triumph, and Fukimaki and Mevorach sent it to singles with Rochester up, 2-1.
DeMichiel defeated Mevorach, 6-2, 6-3, at #5 singles to square it at 2-2. Nunno's win over Parsch at #6 started a run of four straight Rochester points. That put Rochester up, 3-2. Fujimaki made it 4-2 at #1, and Shapiro won in straight sets at #2 to give the Yellowjackets a well-deserved homecourt victory. Leeman stretched the lead to 6-2 by winning, 7-5, 6-3 at #4. Teoh defeated Baranowski in the longest set, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6, to complete the match.
