From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating Allegheny College 8-1 in the early contest, and topping Earlham College 9-0 in the late match at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
With the pair of victories, the Spartans improved to 6-2 overall on the season.
The Spartans opened play on Saturday against Allegheny by sweeping all three doubles matches. Freshmen Sam Concannon and Zach Hennessey defeated Colton Johnson Taylor and Jai Redkar 8-1 at no. 1 doubles, freshman Anthony Kanam and sophomore David Zakhodin added an 8-2 victory over Niall Kneerim and Cooper Miller at second doubles, and senior Fred Daum and freshman Rohith Koneru topped Derek Sawer and Mike Siegel 8-2 at third doubles.
Case Western Reserve went on to win four of the six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-1 win at third singles from Kanam over Siegel, a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fourth singles from freshman Rajeev Laungani over Miller, a 6-2, 6-0 triumph from freshman Joshua Piatos over Kneerim at fifth singles, and a 6-1, 6-1 sixth singles win from Hennessey over Ewan Malenfant. Senior Adam Collins added a three-set win over Johnson Taylor at no. 2 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, while Concannon suffered a 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 setback to Redkar at no. 1 singles.
Allegheny fell to 1-7 on the year with the loss.
The Spartans were dominant in the late contest as well, sweeping all nine matches from Earlham. In doubles action, Zakhodin and Kanam bested Vitalii Stadnyk and Vojislav Tatarevic 8-6 at first doubles, seniors James Fojtasek and Phillip Gruber defeated Joaquin Lerner and Aleksandr Sergeev 8-0 at second doubles, and Hennessey and sophomore John Benedetto picked up an 8-5 win over Adarsh Singh and Fer Bulnes Aramburu at third doubles.
CWRU went on to win each of the six singles matches in straight sets. Freshman Siddharth Rajupet claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win at no. 1 singles over Stadnyk, followed by a 6-2, 6-3 victory from Collins over Singh at second singles. At third singles, sophomore Rob Stroup topped Bulnes Aramburu 7-5, 6-0, with Kanam claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sergeev at fourth singles. Rounding out the win were Laungani with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth singles over Tatarevic, and Daum with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Oliver Daniel at sixth singles.
The loss dropped Earlham to 3-2 for the campaign.
