From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team tarted its 2016 fall season this weekend, when the squad competed at both the Greater Cincinnati Invitational in Mason, Ohio and the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Spartans faced a high level of competition at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational, taking on a field consisting entirely of NCAA Division I teams.  Despite the strength of the field, Case Western Reserve players were able to pick up eight singles and four doubles wins at the competition.

Leading the way for the Spartans in singles play was sophomore Rob Stroup, who ended the weekend with a 2-1 record, including a 6-3, 6-0 win over Xavier's Gabe Araujo and an 8-3 victory over Fernando Nardelli of Wright State University.  Stroup also teamed with senior Josh Dughi to go 2-1 in doubles play with a 6-1 win over Duquesne's Dane Bendel and Andrew Ong and a 6-2 win over Wright State's Nardelli and Javier Alvarez.

Other Spartan players to pick up singles wins at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational included sophomore Oludayo Areke, Dughi, senior Phillip Gruber, senior Gabriel Murcia, freshman Siddharth Rajupet and freshman Henry Squire.  Adding a doubles victory apiece were the duos of Gruber and Murcia and Areke and Rajupet.

Meanwhile, the rest of the squad was in action at the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, with a full field of local NCAA Division III competition.  Freshman Sam Concannon, Zach Hennessey, and Rajeev Laungani and sophomore Tyler Holsopple all went 2-0 to lead the Spartans in singles play, as the team finished with a combined 12-8 singles record over the weekend.

In doubles action at Oberlin, Concannon and freshman Rohith Koneru paired together, going 2-1 at the competition.  Each of the five CWRU doubles pairings at Oberlin won at least one match.
