Emory Off To Hot Start At ITA Region Championships

The Emory University men's tennis team enjoyed an outstanding opening day of action on Friday at the ITA South Region Championships.  The Championships are being held in Sewanee, Tennessee.

All eight Eagles competing in the Main Singles Draw captured their opening two matches and have advanced to Saturday's Round of 16. Sophomore Jonathan Jemison, the No. 1 seed defeated Joan Soler of Belhaven, 6-0, 6-2, in his first match before dispatching Chase Gooding of Berry College, 6-0, 6-0.  Jemison will square off against RJ Clement of Methodist University on Saturday in a scheduled 11:00 am start. Senior Aman Manji, the No. 3 seed, bettered North Carolina Wesleyan's David Chang, 6-2, 6-0, before posting a 6-1, 6-2, triumph vs. Anthony Pellegrini of Birmingham Southern. Manji's Round of 16 foe will be Rhys Richardson of Oglethorpe University. Senior Josh Goodman punched his ticket to Saturday play with a 6-2, 6-0, outcome against Adam Slone of Centre, followed by a 6-0, 6-4, win over Ritwick Chatterjee of Rhodes. Next up for Goodman is Andres Carro of Sewanee. Junior Scott Rubinstein was successful in his two outings, defeating Reid Rose of Methodist, 6-1, 6-0, and Jack Gray of Sewanee, 6-2, 6-2.  Junior Alec Josepher earned the right to play No. 2 Avery Schober of Sewanee on Saturday after coming away with verdicts over Henry Friedler of Millsaps, 6-4, 6-2, and Danile Oliver of Rhodes, 6-1, 6-3.  Sophomore Adrien Bouchet got his season off on the right foot, toppling Mason Church of Guilford and Albert Vacheron of Rhodes, 6-2, 6-4.  Bouchet will meet Sewanee's Jordan Brewer in the next round.  Two Eagle freshmen, Rex Serituk and Hassan Kenawi battled to a pair of wins, with Serituk moving on to tangle with No. 4 seed JD Telles from North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday and Kenawi drawing Ioannis Brokakis from NC Wesleyan. 

In doubles action, four of Emory's five teams won opening-round matches in the Main Draw, highlighted by the No. 1 tandem of Rubinstein and sophomore James Spaulding, who notched an 8-2 win over Sewanee's Scottie Abeel and Alejandra Becker. Junior David Omsky and Jemison topped Methodist's Reid Rose and Jacob Oehse, 8-2, while Manji and Serituk blanked Adam Slone and Matthew Ko of Centre.  Freshmen Harry Shepherd and Max Renke joined forces and chalked up an 8-4 win over Mark Sokolov and Ioannis Brokakis.
