In a final match that featured two University of Chicago men's tennis players, David Liu came away with the singles title to wrap up the four-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Monday.
With the win, UChicago has now swept the ITA Central Region singles and doubles titles for three-consecutive seasons. The singles final was relocated from Kalamazoo College to UChicago's Stagg Field Courts due to the fact that both participants were from the same school.
A pair of junior teammates faced off midday on Monday with No. 8-seed Liu taking on Peter Leung. Each player had gone 6-0 over the weekend to outlast the 128-man field. Liu jumped out to the early advantage in the first set, earning a break to go up 3-0. The two players exchanged points up to 5-3 and Liu held to take the set, 6-3.
With momentum on his side, Liu ran off the opening five games of the second set. Leung broke back and then held service to make the score 5-2. Liu then finished off the match on serve with an ace to win 6-3, 6-2. The junior advances to the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup (Oct. 13-16), where he will face off against the other ITA Regional singles champions in an eight-player bracket. He will be joined by ITA Central Region doubles champions senior Max Hawkins and freshman Tyler Raclin.
"Today's final was the culmination of a great weekend of tennis for the team and especially Peter and Dave," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "It's never easy to watch two teammates play each other, but I thought both guys handled it well and competed hard. Dave was a freight train in this tournament and he kept the momentum going in the finals despite a tough opponent in Peter. I'm extremely proud of the entire team for their performance and we're all very much looking forward to the rest of the season."
