The #29-ranked New York University men's tennis team defeated The College of New Jersey 5-4, on Wednesday, March 29, in Ewing, NJ.
The Violets (6-2) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, as senior Umberto Setter and junior Samuel Khoshbin won their #1 match, while senior Matt DeMichiel and freshman Zeb Zheng earned a win at #3.
"The match was as close as the score indicated," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "TCNJ won the first three singles matches to take a 4-2 lead, but then our freshmen stepped up when we needed them."
That freshman trio of Michael Li, Vishal Walia and Xavier Pacthod, playing at #4-6 singles, respectively, then came through to lead the comeback victory.
"Michael continued his strong play and drew us to 4-3," Choy explained. "Xavier made it 4-4 and Vishal came back from a set down to win the last two sets and clinch the match. It was a dramatic win and well-earned."
