NYU Completes First Day of Play at TCNJ

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's tennis team completed its first day of play at the Lions' Kickoff Tournament held at The College of New Jersey on Friday, September 9, in Ewing, NJ.

Playing in their first tournament of the season, the Violets posted an 5-3 record in singles play.

Freshman Michael Li had a strong showing in his NYU debut, defeating TCNJ's Thomas Wright 7-6 (9), 6-2.

"Li played the most competitive match of the day," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "He came through for us at the tiebreaker of the first set, and then he was able to relax a little during the second set."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- After missing last season, junior Ian Combemale had a strong return to the team. The Bridgehampton, NY, native defeated TCNJ's Jack August 6-3, 6-4.

"Ian played well for us a couple of years ago, so this was not a surprise," added Choy.

- Seniors Matt DeMichiel and Umberto Setter, and junior Jiri Honajzer picked up NYU's final three victories on the afternoon.
