Three Yellowjackets Advance Through Day 1 of ITA Regional

From University of Rochester Athletics

After the opening day of play at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, the University of Rochester men's tennis team has one singles player and one doubles team still alive in the main draws of competition.

Sophomore Masaru Fujimaki, seeded 9-16 in the singles draw won both of his matches in convincing fashion to reach the third round of competition.  In his opening match, the sophomore shutout Ramapo's Adam Petreovics 8-0 in a pro-set.  In the second round, he was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over David Schulz from Stevens.  Fujimaki's third round opponent will be second seeded Nick Litsky of Vassar.

In doubles play, the team of junior Andrew Nunno and senior Sam Leeman are through to the quarterfinals after winning two matches on Saturday at Hobart College.  In their opening round, Nunno and Leeman were 8-0 winners over Liam Spiegel and Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos of Ithaca.  They backed that up with a tough 8-6 win over Jonathan Atwater and Patrick Gray from the host Hobart Statesmen.  In the quarters, the Yellowjacket duo will take on the tournaments top seeded team from NYU, Matt DeMichiel and Benedict Teoh.

Rochester also had one additional singles player and one doubles team reach the second round of play before bowing out.  UR freshman Yifan Shen was an 8-1 winner over Lamar Hurt of Nazareth in the singles draw.  In his second round match though, Shen was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Skidmore's Steven Koulouris, the #3 seed in the tournament.

Fujimaki and freshman Sahaj Somani combined to win 8-0 in the opening round of doubles over Kevin Volz and Peter Smock of Alfred University, but were then defeated 8-4 by Zack Ebenfeld and Sebastian Sanchez of RPI in round two.

Other results from UR players in singles were Nunno, Leeman and Somani all dropping opening round matches.  Nunno fell to top seed Kai Yuen Leung of Skidmore 8-1, the same score by which Leeman was dispatched by Juan Felipe Laso of Vassar.  Michael Feldman of Stevens was an 8-2 winner over Somani in the opening round.
