Doubles Sweep Keys Rochester Win Over PR-Mayaguez

Rochester's men's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory on Tuesday, defeating the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in the teams opener on its spring break Puerto Rico trip.

The Yellowjackets (5-4) picked up three straight wins in doubles to kickstart the victory and only surrendered one singles match, coming at #1 to the Bulldogs.

Rochester's #2 and #3 doubles teams both shutout their Mayaguez opponents by an 8-0 score.  At #2, Sam Leeman and Andrew Nunno won over Carlos Atienza and Adriel Irizarry.  At #3, Tanmay Thakkar and Sahaj Somani topped Eduardo Hernandez and Sebastian Montaluo.  UR's Aaron Mevorach and Masaru Fujimaki completed the 3-0 sweep with an 8-3 win over Fabian Rodriguez and Jose Ayala.

In singles, Thakkar picked up UR's first point 6-1, 6-0 over I. Rodriguez at #5 and that followed by Mevorach earning the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Atienza at the #3 spot.

Jun Yuminaga rattled off a 6-0, 6-3 victory at #6 over Fernando Ramirez, Andrew Nunno then topped Ayala 7-6, 6-1 at #2 with that being followed by Somani winning 6-4, 7-6 over Irizarry.

At #1 singles, Rodriguez edged out Fujimaki in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
