Tartans Edge Kenyon For Fourth Consecutive Win

The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team won its fourth straight match on Sunday, April 15 when it topped 16th-ranked Kenyon College, 5-4, on the indoor courts at The Club Sport and Life in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. The Tartans are now 12-5 for the season.

Sophomore Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) earned match point for the Tartans after rebounding from a first-set loss to earn a three-set victory, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Tartans held a 2-1 advantage after doubles with wins at first and third doubles. The 15th-ranked pair of junior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and junior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) won 8-7 (7-5) at the first position while sophomore Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and freshman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) won at third doubles, 8-2.

Levine, ranked second in the nation, made the score 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles before a win at second singles by Kenyon made it 3-2.

Freshman Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) extended the Tartans' lead to 4-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles. A three-set victory at third singles for Kenyon and a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win by Kenyon at sixth singles tied the match at 4-all before Levin earned the team win with all eyes watching.
