Spartans Roll by Oberlin 8-1

The 15th-ranked Case Western Reserve University picked up its first win of the spring season on Friday evening, defeating Oberlin College 8-1 at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Pepper Pike, Ohio.

The win raised the Spartans' record to 1-2 overall, while Oberlin dropped to 1-5 with the loss.

Case Western Reserve swept through its three doubles matches on Friday, with senior James Fojtasek and freshman Matthew Chen topping Manickam Manickam and Robert Gittings 8-4 in the first doubles match, sophomores Sam Concannon and Anthony Kanam earning an 8-4 victory over Michael Drougas and Stephen Gruppuso at no. 2 doubles, and freshman Neil Mabee and sophomore Zach Hennessey claiming an 8-4 win over Levi Kimmel and Elliot Nuss at no. 3 doubles.

The Spartans would go on to win four of the six singles matches in straight sets, including dominating victories from Fojtasek, 6-1, 6-2 over Drougas at no. 1 singles, and Chen, 6-1, 6-1 over Manickam at no. 2 singles.  Junior Rob Stroup claimed a three-set win at third singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, while sophomore Siddharth Rajupet topped Gittings 6-4, 6-2 at no. 4 singles, and Concannon earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kimmel in the fifth singles match.  The Spartans' lone setback on Friday came in the sixth singles match, where sophomore Henry Squire fell in three sets to Nuss, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
