From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III, claimed a pair of wins over Rose-Hulman on Saturday, defeating the Fightin' Engineers 8-1 in the first match and 5-0 in the second contest at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
With the two wins, the Spartans improved to 13-8 on the season, while Rose-Hulman fell to 12-9.
In the early match, the Spartans claimed wins in all three of the doubles contests. The second doubles duo of freshmen Neil Mabee and Jonathan Powell were the first to finish, defeating Austin Perry and Grant Stamper 8-2. Freshman Matthew Chen and sophomore Sam Concannon followed with an 8-4 win over Brendan Goldacker and Andrew Schiffman at third double, 8-4, and at no. 1 doubles, senior James Fojtasek and sophomore Anthony Kanam defeated Ian Landwehr and Cam Metzger 8-4.
Kanam would extend the team's lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Schiffman at third singles, and junior Rob Stroup secured the team victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Perry at fourth singles. Other wins from CWRU in the match came from Chen over Metzger at no. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, sophomore Siddharth Rajupet over Ben Strate at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Concannon over Goldacker at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Spartans' only loss in the match came in the first singles match, where Fojtasek suffered a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 setback to Landwehr.
In the second match of the day, which was played to decision, the Spartans once again surged to an early lead with three doubles victories. Mabee and Powell defeated Metzger and Landwehr 9-7 at first doubles, sophomore Zach Hennessey and freshman Earl Hsieh topped Perry and Stamper 8-0 at second doubles, and freshman Josh Hsia and Chen earned an 8-1 win over Goldacker and Schiffman at third doubles.
Needing just two singles matches to clinch a victory, Hennessey defeated Goldacker 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles and Mabee bested Stamper 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. The other four singles matches went unfinished.
