Spartans Bounce Back With 6-3 Win Over Swarthmore

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 25th in Division III, completed play at the Stag-Hen Invitational on Tuesday with a 6-3 win over 32nd-ranked Swarthmore College in Claremont, California.

Case Western Reserve improved to 7-6 with the win, while the loss dropped Swarthmore to 2-4.

The Spartans jumped out to the early lead in the match after doubles, with wins from sophomores Anthony Kanam and Sam Concannon at second doubles, 8-2 over John Lathrop and Simon Vernier, and freshmen Jonathan Powell and Neil Mabee at third doubles, 8-1 over Jiung Jung and Thibault Vernier. CWRU's lone doubles defeat came at first doubles, where senior James Fojtasek and freshman Matthew Chen lost 8-4 to Josh Powell and Mark Fallati.

CWRU went on to win four of the six singles matches to secure the win.  At first singles, Fojtasek bested Fallati 6-1, 6-1, and Kanam claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Simon Vernier at no. 3 singles. Other singles wins came Concannon over Powell at fourth singles, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 and sophomore Siddharth Rajupet over Lathrop at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3.
