From Washington University Athletics
Sophomore Bernardo Neves and senior Johnny Wu of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team were named to the 2017-18 Google Cloud Division III Men's Academic All-America At-Large Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Tuesday.
Neves was a first team selection, while Wu was honored on the third team. Neves is the third player in school history to earn first team honors, joining Isaac Stein (2010, 2011) and Adam Putterman (2013).
"It is great to see when our student-athletes get recognized for their dedication to their sport and to their academics," said WashU men's tennis coach Roger Follmer. "The Academic All-America distinction is about as high of an honor one can receive in intercollegiate sports. This epitomizes what some call Scholar Champions. Johnny Wu and Bernardo Neves were great role models within our program in terms of their work ethic on and off the court."
BERNARDO NEVES
Neves had a 51-16 overall record in 2017-18 while playing No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, and was named the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Player to Watch. He had a 29-5 record in singles, including a 21-1 mark in dual match.
Neves was named to the ITA Division III All-America team after advancing to the quarterfinals. He finished the season ranked No. 21 in Division III.
Neves was a first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection at No. 2 singles and a member of the UAA All-Tournament Team. He has a 94-31 record in two seasons, and is six wins shy of 100 for his career.
A 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District and Academic all-UAA selection, Neves has a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in mechanical engineering and computer science.
JOHNNY WU
Wu closed out his career at WashU earning All-America honors in singles after qualifying for the NCAA singles championship for the second-consecutive year.
A first-team all-UAA selection at No. 1 singles, he was 18-10 in singles and finished the year ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II. Wu recorded a 28-15 overall record in 2017-18, and concludes his four-year career with 99 wins.
A three-time Academic All-UAA and 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District honoree, Wu graduated in May with a 3.85 GPA while majoring in finance.
In order to be selected to the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing.
