The New York University men's tennis team opened its season at the Lions' Kickoff Tournament hosted by the College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ, on Sunday, September 10.
Competing exclusively in doubles matches against TCNJ, Dickinson College and Stevens Institute of Technology, the Violets finished the day with a 6-6 record (1-3 vs. TCNJ, 4-0 vs. Dickinson, 1-3 vs. Stevens).
"We played pretty well," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy. "There is still plenty of room for improvement and we know what we need to work on."
Two NYU pairs finished the day with 2-1 records. The team of freshman Rahul Das and senior Umberto Setter picked up wins against TCNJ and Dickinson, while the duo of freshman Jay Min and sophomore Joshua Piatos defeated opponents from Dickinson and Stevens. Das and Min earned their first collegiate victories, and Piatos (who competed at Case Western Reserve University last season) notched his first two wins as a Violet.
"Our first-year athletes (Das, Min and Piatos) showed some solid play and improved as the day went on," added Choy.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Michael Li and junior Shrikar Kundur defeated Dickinson's Samuel Loring and Joey Bolanos 8-4.
- Sophomore Zeb Zheng and freshman Justin Chong bested Dickinson's Jordan Haber and Vincent Tover Dias 8-2.
- Making his Violet debut, freshman Aaron Mackie, competing with Kundur, lost a close 9-8 (10-8) match to Stevens' Keegan Morris and Mark Kanevsky.
"We will see two of the three teams (Stevens and TCNJ) again in a couple of weeks," continued Choy. "We look forward to that, as our guys will be better."
