Chicago Rolls On With 8-1 Victory at CWRU

From University of Chicago Athletics

The No. 9-ranked University of Chicago men's tennis team continued its weekend in Ohio with a victory at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday.

The Maroon men (4-0 record) were first up in the playing order and they came out firing in doubles. UChicago went up 3-0 with a doubles sweep by scores of 8-4, 8-6 and 8-3. Singles was a closer ordeal; Case Western Reserve took the opening set in three out of six matches. But the visitors were able to clinch the match early as sophomore Erik Kerrigan (No. 3) and first-year Jeremy Yuan (No. 4) cruised through their matches while dropping only seven games combined.

Even with the win in hand, UChicago closed well. Seniors Nicolas Chua and Luke Tsai, along with first-year Alejandro Rodriguez, won 7-6 tiebreakers in the second sets of their matches. Chua and Tsai went on to seize their third-set super tiebreakers as well at the top of the lineup. Chua, Yuan and Kerrigan picked up multiple wins on the day.

"The men really came to play today and took a step forward as a team," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "For them to go on the road and beat a very good Case team that had our number in the past is very encouraging. We played disciplined, physical, tough tennis and found a way to win the close matches. We will enjoy this one for a few hours and then come back ready for Oberlin tomorrow morning."
