Chicago Takes Down Williams 5-2

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's tennis team concluded its California spring break trip with a win against Williams College on Friday.

Doubles play kicked off with 8-2 wins by both teams, as the third pairing of junior Charlie Pei and senior Bobby Bethke raced through their match. The second doubles spot proved dramatic as the match went to a tiebreaker. However, it was sophomore Tyler Raclin and first-year Jeremy Yuan who came out the victors 8-7.

With momentum on its side, UChicago demonstrated its prowess in singles. Senior Nicolas Chua took the first-set tiebreak at No. 2, then raced through the second set by a 6-2 margin. Yuan was similarly efficient with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3. Senior Luke Tsai then earned the clinching team point with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. The team match was played to decision and two courts concluded as unfinished.

"I couldn't be more proud of the men's team as I am after today's win," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "After a disappointing showing on Wednesday, the coaches spent the past two days challenging the team to bring more energy and to compete at a higher level at every spot, and the guys responded in a big way. To go into that match down four starters from earlier in the year and to come out with a win against a team as good as Williams tells me all I need to know about what this team is made of."
