For the second time this season, the University of Chicago men's tennis team defeated Washington University on Saturday afternoon.

No. 3-ranked UChicago (12-3 record) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles from No. 10-ranked WashU. Senior Bobby Bethke and junior Charlie Pei ran roughshod at No. 3 doubles with a spotless 8-0 shutout. Sophomore Erik Kerrigan and senior Nicolas Chua held on for an 8-7 win at No. 1, while first-year Jeremy Yuanand sophomore Tyler Raclin took No. 2 by an 8-4 margin.

The match was clinched at 5-0 when Chua and Kerrigan won three-set battles at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. The remaining victories came courtesy of Yuan at No. 4 and Pei at No. 6.

The previous time the two teams met was at the ITA Indoor Nationals on February 25, with UChicago edging out WashU 5-4.

"Both teams played tough, gritty and inspired tennis today - easily one of the best days of competition I've seen during my time at UChicago," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We were great in the big moments and competed as a team at every single spot for every single point, making us very tough to beat. Both teams are continuing to improve on a daily basis and things are starting to come together at the right time of year. That being said, we can't get too happy with ourselves quite yet as we still have lots of tennis left to play this year."
