Two singles player and one doubles team advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets on Day 1 of St. Lawrence Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Tanmay Thakkar reached the B Flight singles semis that will take place on Sunday and first-year teammate Peter Huang matched his feat in the C Flight singles bracket.
In doubles, the team of Damani Eubanks and Yifan Shen posted one win in the B Doubles bracket and will compete in the semifinals tomorrow.
Thakkar started his day off with an 8-2 win over Matt May from Hamilton. He then topped Marshall Comia of Ithaca 9-8 (4) in the quarterfinals and will face off against Walker Anderson of Hobart in the next round.
In the C singles draw, Huan topped Ithaca's Sam Freid in the opening round 8-3. He then won by the same score of Joe Mallon of Hobart in the quarters and will meet RIT's Spencer Lowitt in the semifinals.
The Eubanks and Shen pairing received a bye in the first round of the B doubles flight and then dispatched Lomas and Comia from Ithaca 8-4.
Rochester had several other entries in the tournament draws, all of which were eliminated in day one's action.
In the A singles bracket, both Andrew Nunno and Masaru Fujimaki won their opening round matches, but in the quarterfinals, Fujimaki defaulted against Harry Nichols from Hobart while Nunno dropped an 8-4 decision to Hobart's Jonathan Atwater.
Rochester's three other entries in the B singles bracket, Shen, Somani and Jun Yuminaga all ended up dropping their opening round matches. Eubanks also lost in the first round of the C Flight singles draw.
The Yellowjackets also had three entries in the A doubles flight, all of which fell in the opening round, matching the result of UR's other B Flight doubles entry.
