Sophomore Ethan Hillis of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team captured the 2018 ITA Division III Central Region Singles title with a three-set win Monday at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
Hillis, the No. 8 seed, defeated No. 7 seed Jeremy Yuan of the University of Chicago 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the championship match.
He is the first WashU men's tennis student-athlete to win a Central Region singles title since 2012. Hillis is the ninth student-athlete in head coach Roger Follmer's 18 seasons to win the regional singles title joining Brian Alvo (2001, 2003), John Watts (2006-09) and Adam Putterman (2011, 2012).
He is 6-0 this season in singles, and has a 7-1 overall record in the fall.
Hillis advances to 2018 ITA Cup, held Oct. 11-14, at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.
