Carnegie Mellon Takes Down Two School Records to Begin Post Season

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team began their post season at the ninth annual Gator Invitational at Allegheny College.  The Tartans broke two school records in attempts for national qualifying marks.

In the hammer throw, senior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) threw his third school record this season with a toss of 55.47 meters to finish in second place.  Erra-Hernandez also took fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus as he heaved the ball 14.96 meters and the disc 45.05 meters.

Senior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) threw hammer, shot put, discus, and javelin performing well in all four events.  In the hammer, Cheek released the implement 48.23 meters for seventh.  For 10th place in the discus, he threw a distance of 41.76 meters. Cheek also took 11th in the javelin and the shot put with throws of 49.42 meters and 13.28 meters, respectively. 

Freshman David Ott also competed in the javelin throw at the Gator Invitational.  He finished in 12th place with a toss of 46.98 meters.

In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) crossed the finish line with a time of 56.28.

Junior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) won the 800-meter run and smashed the previous school record of 1:52.14 that he set in 2012 with a new career-best time of 1:50.23.  This new time puts him in second place in the nation.

During his final collegiate race, senior Jerome Reano (Albuquerque, N.M./Saint Pius X) set a new personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.52 for 11th place.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished in fifth place with a time of 10:12.00.

Sophomore Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) crossed the finish line of the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.82 for sixth place overall.

Also in his final meet, senior Christopher Holliday (Athens, Ohio/Athens) sailed over the bar in the pole vault with a final height of 4.10 meters.
