Career-Bests Lead Tartans at Slippery Rock

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University on Saturday, April 18. Fourteen teams from all three divisions competed at the meet.

The 5,000-meter run saw freshman Paul Fleming (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) finish second overall in 16:06.75 with sophomore William Casazza (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) crossing third in 16:10.35.

Freshman Joseph Pickens (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg Coventry) won his heat of the 1,500-meter run and finished eighth overall in a time of 4:16.02, as he was the first Division III runner to cross the finish line. Freshman Ani Ramakrishnan (Davis, Calif./Davis) was one person behind Pickens, finishing in 4:18.24.

Sophomore Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) and freshman Cameron Smith(Darien, Conn./Darien) each recorded career highs during the meet as Boyer finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.65 seconds and Smith cleared 1.80 meters in the high jump, finishing ninth. Boyer also recorded a career-high in the long jump when he lept 6.54 meters to finish sixth.

Freshman Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 45.99 meters and seventh in the discus throw with a mark of 40.64 meters, while freshman David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was eighth in the shot put with a mark of 13.76 meters.
