Thomas Vandenberg Three-Peats as UAA Outdoor 800-Meter Champion

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished sixth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Track and Field Championships which concluded Sunday, April 26 after two days of action at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) was the Tartans lone individual champion on Sunday winning the 800-meter race fir the third consecutive year.

Vandenberg crossed the finish line with a time of 1:53.64 to win the 800-meter race while fellow Tartan, junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), crossed second with a career-best time of 1:54.94.  Also, running in the event was freshman Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) who placed seventh with a time of 1:57.16. Julien earned All-UAA honors for his finish.

The Tartans had two others that garnered All-UAA honors on Sunday.  Sophomore Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) took third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:55.87 and freshman Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) placed second in the discus with a career-best toss of 42.74 meters.  Classmate David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) competed in the discus and took sixth after recording a distance of 38.28 meters.

Carnegie Mellon earned team points in the field events from sophomore Jacob Brooks (Sherwood, Ore.) as well.  The sophomore finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 50.72 meters.

The Tartans earned team points in three other running events.  Senior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) crossed the line in 15:15.23 in the 5,000 meter run to place fourth while the other team points were earned in the hurdle events.  

Junior Ben Neiman (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) had a time of 56.78 in the 400-meter hurdles to place fifth. Sophomores Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) and Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) along with junior Zach Dell (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the 110-meter hurdles. Boyer crossed in 16.08 followed by Sheh in 16.60 and then Dell in 17.84.
