Bears Take Team Title at WashU Invite

The Washington University in St. Louis men's track & field team won the team title at the Washington University Invite held Friday-Saturday at Bushyhead Track.

The WashU men won the team title with 128 points, while Wabash College finished second with 102.

Junior Josh Clark led a first- through third-place sweep for the WashU men in the 1,500. He clocked a winning time of 3:56.25, while sophomores Mike Sullivan (3:59.08) and Dillon Williams (3:59.68) both clocked career-best times to place second and third, respectively.

Senior Nick Alaniva led four top-eight finishers for the WashU men in the pole vault. He equaled his season-best with a clearance of 4.55 meters to win the event. Freshman Jacob Rother finished fifth with a clearance of 4.40m, while sophomores Andy Manzanares and Dominic Maley both cleared 4.25m to place sixth and seventh, respectively. Alaniva added a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a season-best leap of 6.50m, while junior Alex Arteaga was eighth with a mark of 6.37m.

Sophomore Ryan Becker placed first in the 10,000 in a time of 31:03.83. Senior Brendan Stone accounted for the fourth individual title for the WashU men, winning the 400 hurdles in 54.12. Stone also teamed with juniors James Fitzhugh and Alex Bastian and sophomore Deko Ricketts to finish second in the 1,600 relay in a time of 3:19.29. Ricketts (50.07) and Fitzhugh (50.62) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400. 

The men's 400 relay team of Alaniva, seniors Troy Makous and James Hallwood and freshman Michael Billington finished second in 42.71. Hallwood also placed fourth in the 200 (22.32) and sixth in the 100 (11.14), both season-best times. Senior Andrew Catanese (9:43.10), junior Peter Metz ( 9:45.09) and freshman Andrew de Jong (9:55.88) placed third, fourth and sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase for the Bears. Senior Ian Montague (45.16m) and junior Joey Pasque (1.90m) added fifth-place finishes for the WashU men in the hammer throw and high jump, respectively.
