Bears Sweep WashU Mini Meet to Open Outdoor Season

The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's track & field teams opened their outdoor seasons by winning 23 of 35 events contested at the WashU Mini Meet Friday at Bushyhead Track.

The WashU men won 13 events and scored 300 points to win the team title over runner-up Webster University (119). The WashU women also won the team title, winning 10 events and scoring 246 points. Webster was second in the women's team standings with 83 points.

Senior James Hallwood and freshman Julia Fraenkel won two events each for WashU. Hallwood took first in the men's 100 (11.15) and 200 (22.41). Fraenkel finished first in both the women's long jump (4.60m) and triple jump (10.00m).

Junior Joey Pasque equaled the second-best height in school history in the men's high jump. He won the event with a clearance of 2.03m, which is just two centimeters shy of the school record.

Senior Nick Alaniva had three top-two finishes on the day for the WashU men. He won the long jump with a mark of 6.46m, and finished second behind Hallwood in the 100 (11.21). Alaniva and senior Troy Makous both cleared 4.55m in the pole vault, with Makous finishing first and Alaniva second. 

Sophomore Ashley Knudson took nearly five seconds off her career best to win the women's 800 in a time of 2:17.91. Sophomore Natalie Newman added a career-best in the pole vault (2.90m) to win the event for the WashU women. Junior Adam Streicher had a career-best for the WashU men to win the 1,500. His winning time of 4:03.90 was more than 16 seconds better than his previous best.

Other event winners for WashU included: senior Tim Elliott (men's 400, 52.98); sophomore Conor Cashner (men's 800, 1:59.77); freshmanAudrey Western (women's 1,500, 4:51.17); senior Kelsey Barton (women's 5,000, 19:09.96); junior Alex Arteaga (men's 110 hurdles, 15.98); sophomore Kelli Hancock (women's 400 hurdles, 1:04.11); sophomore Phillip DeRenzo (men's 400 hurdles, 59.49); women's 1,600 relay (4:06.53); junior Maisie Mahoney (women's high jump, 1.53m); freshman Jordan Franklin (men's triple jump, 12.54m); senior Melissa Gilkey(women's javelin, 42.81m); senior Zach Lonneman (men's shot put, 13.61m); and senior Ian Montague (men's hammer throw, 43.94m).
