From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its Mini Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26 at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans placed first with 311 points after winning 11 events against Waynesburg University, Denison University, Allegheny College and Franciscan University.
Sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) won the hammer throw on Friday evening with a career-best mark of 52.33 meters, which is the third best throw in school history. The Tartans also picked up points in the hammer with third and fourth-place finishes by freshman Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) and sophomore David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). Sladick's toss landed 40.47 meters while Trzcinski recorded a mark of 39.65 meters. Both were career-best throws.
Trzcinski took second in the shot put with a throw of 14.03 meters and Sladick turned in a third-place showing in the discus with a mark of 36.52 meters.
Freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) placed first with a meet record leap of 6.57 meters in the long jump. Junior Matthew Seifu (Silver Spring, Md./Sidwell Friends) leapt 6.28 meters for a third-place finish. In the triple jump, sophomore Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) placed second with a mark of 12.98 meters.
Junior Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee, Fla./ Maclay School) took second in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.73 meters. Senior Victor Yan (Irvington, N.Y.) also cleared the bar at 3.73 meters, but tied for third on the judge's decision. In the high jump, freshman Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) and sophomore Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn.) both cleared the bar at 1.81 meters, but Farber was awarded second and Smith third based on another judge's decision.
The Tartans 4x100 relay team of Seifu, junior Zachary Blonder (Swampscott, Mass.), senior Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) and freshman Christopher Bayley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) finished first with a time of 44.25 seconds. Chen then won the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 23.09 and placed second in the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 11.30 seconds. Bayley placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 100 with times of 23.73 and 11.59 seconds.
Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) won the 1,500-meter run with a meet record and career-best time of 3:59.82.
The Tartans swept the top three spots in the 110-meter hurdles. Junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) won the event with a time of 15.97. Junior Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) took second in 16.48 and freshman George Viccaro (Paramus, N.J.) finished third in 16.55 seconds.
In the 400-meter run, freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) crossed in a meet record time of 50.52 to win the event while sophomore Jonathan Perry(Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) crossed in 51.62 to place second.
For the second consecutive week, junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) won the 800-meter run. Norley crossed in 1:54.11 followed by senior teammate Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) and sophomore Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) in second and third with times of 1:55.17 and 1:56.12.
The Tartans swept the 5,000-meter run with freshman William Mitchell (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) crossing first in 15:28.85, freshman Liam Walsh (Needham, Mass./Needham) placing second in 15:29.34 and junior Gordon Pace (Orlando, Fla./Trinity Prep) crossing third in 15:44.45.
The last event of the day saw the Tartans win the 4x400-meter relay when Bayley, Chen, Perry and Norley finished the event in 3:25.24.
