Tartans Earn Win at Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the CMU Quad Meet on Saturday, April 2 with 205 points, just topping Penn State Behrend who finished with 198 points. Westminster College placed third with 164 points while Saint Vincent College was fourth with 64 points.

Freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) won the long jump with a mark of 6.79 meters against a -1.2 wind reading. In the triple jump, sophomore Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) finished third with a jump of 12.65 meters. Sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.04 meters while sophomore David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was third with a mark of 41.22 meters.

The discus saw the Tartans finish with second- and third-place points, as Schofel was second with a mark of 37.94 meters and freshman Kenny Sladick(Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) was third with a throw of 36.04 meters.

Freshman Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and sophomore Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn./Darien) each cleared 1.81 meters to tie their respective career best and tied for third place in the high jump.

Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:50.45 while junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) kicked it in on the back stretch to win the 1,500-meter run in 4:04.89. Junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) joined the victory club with a win in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.45 seconds.

Senior Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) was second in the 400-meter run in 51.27 to tie his career-best while he was third in the 200-meter dash in 23.50. Fellow senior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) also picked up a second-place finish when he crossed the finish line in 1:55.88 in the 800-meter run.

Senior Joshua Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) led the Tartans in the 3,000-meter run, placing first in 8:58.39. Junior Gordon Pace (Orlando, Fla./Trinity Prep) was behind Antonson in second place with a time of 9:09.25.

The 4x400-meter relay closed the running events with a win as freshman Kyle Lee (Menlo Park, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding), Julien, freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and Norley won by nearly three seconds in 3:25.44.
