From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished second scoring 137 points during the two-day University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships meet. The host, Washington University of St. Louis, won the meet scoring 161.5 points. This marked the fourth time the Tartans have finished second in the past five championships.    

Carnegie Mellon had two individuals crowned UAA Champions with both occurring on the first day of competition on Saturday. Sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) tossed the hammer 49.38 meters to win the event while freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) recorded a season-best leap on 6.82 meters in the long jump to also claim a UAA title. Schofel also placed third in the discus with a season-best throw of 42.46 meters.

The Tartans turned in five second-place and two additional third-place finishes throughout the meet. Sophomore Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn.) had a career-best throw of 55.11 meters in the javelin to place second and classmate David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) finished third in the shot put with a season-best mark of 14.67 meters.

On the track, junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) recorded a career-best time of 15.54 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to finish third. Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after crossing in 9:21.50.

Junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and senior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) also picked up a second-place finishes with career-best times. Norley crossed in 3:54.45 in the 1,500-meter run and Julien finished the 800-meter run in 1:52.86.

The Tartans 4x800-meter relay team of Julien, Norley, junior Brady Wilson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep (Wake Forest)) and freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) took second with a time of 7:43.58.
