From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
Gary Aldrich, head coach of the Carnegie Mellon University track and field teams, has been named to the U.S.A. coaching staff as the Assistant Throws Coach for the 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championships this summer. The event will take place in London, England, from August 3-14. This marks Aldrich's fifth coaching stint on the international stage.
"U.S.A. Track and Field has once again given me one of the greatest opportunities in my coaching career to coach on my fifth international team," said Aldrich. "To not only go to the best track meet in the world, but to have literally a front row seat at the World Outdoor Championships in London, England is an incredible honor. Being selected as one of the coaches for The World's #1 Track & Field Team is a dream come true."
In July 2010, Aldrich served as the assistant throws coach for the NACAC (North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Association) Under 23 Team and in July 2012, he served as the throws coach for the United States at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Two years ago, Aldrich coached the throwers at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, before being named the Men's Throws Coach for the 2016 World Indoor Championships last March in Portland, Oregon.
"I look forward to working with our nation's top throwers, some of whom I probably have had the pleasure to work with on past teams," added Aldrich. "The opportunities to be on staff for Team USA, to meet, work with and be around the best athletes in the world competing and training at the highest level have and will continue to help me develop as a coach. A number of the Tartan athletes are already very excited to see what new drills and ideas I will be bringing home with me."
