From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Nine members of the Case Western Reserve University track and field team received All-Great Lakes Region recognition from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), based on their performances during the 2017 outdoor season.

Spartans receiving All-Region honors included sophomore Joseph Cabral, junior Andrew Ibibo and Jonathan Haling in the 4x400-meter relay, senior Nathaniel Wahner in the 4x400-meter relay, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, freshman Brian Holden in the javelin throw, junior Sam Merriman in the 5,000-meter run, freshman Dominic Oddo in the long jump, sophomore Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles and junior Cassandra Laios in the hammer throw.

To be named All-Region, an athlete must either be ranked in the top-five of an individual event in the region according to final TFRRS data or be part of a top-three relay team. This was the second year that the USTFCCCA has awarded All-Region honors.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Wahner, Ibibo, Cabral and Haling finished second in the Great Lakes Region and sixth in Division III with a school-record time of 3:13.62, recorded at the Harrison Dillard Twilight on May 12^th. Wahner finished first in the region and 17^th in Division III with a school-record time of 21.43 in the 200-meter dash, recorded at the Great Lakes Elite Meet on Thursday. He also finished second in the region and tied for sixth in Division III with a school-record time of 47.64 in the 400-meter dash, recorded at the 2017 UAA Outdoor Championships on April 22^nd. Wahner rounded his All-Region honors by finishing fourth in the region and tied for 20^th in Division III with a school-record time of 10.67 in the 100-meter dash, recorded at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on April 15^th.

Holden was fifth in the region and 48^th in Division III with javelin toss of 56.19 meters, set at the Harrison Dillard Twilight on May 12^th. Merriman was second among Great Lakes competitors and 23^rd in Division III with a school-record time of 14:29.93 in the 5,000-meter run, recorded at the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 13^th. Oddo was fourth in the region and 36^th in Division III with a long jump mark of 7.09 meters, set at the UAA Outdoor Championships on April 22^nd.

Ibibo, Cabral and Haling collected their second All-Region honor of the year, after earning honors during the indoor season for the 4x400-meter relay. Wahner also earned All-Region honors as a part of the 4x400-meter relay and individually in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash in the winter, while Merriman earned his second All-Region honor, after earning honors during the indoor season for the 3,000-meter run. This was Holden and Oddo's first career All-Region honors of their career.

For the women, Newman was fourth in the Great Lakes Region in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.77 at the UAA Outdoor Championships on April 22^nd, while Laios finished fourth in the region and 23^rd in Division III with a school-record mark of 51.30 meters at the Harrison Dillard Twilight on May 12^th.

It was the second career All-Region Track and Field honor for Newman, while it was the first All-Region honor for Laios.
