Tyler Bushman and Dominic Oddo Highlight First Day at UAA Championships for CWRU

Case Western Reserve University junior Tyler Bushman claimed an All-University Athletic Association honor in the hammer throw and sophomore Dominic Oddo claimed an All-UAA honor in the long jump, to lead the Spartans during the first day of competition at the 2018 UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Bushman finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.04 meters. He scored six points towards the Spartans team with his finish in the event, while senior Alex Nesvisky added four points after finishing fifth with a mark of 45.51 meters.

Oddo placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.56 meters. He also scored six points towards the Spartans team total with his finish in the event, while freshman Jordan Butler added three points after finishing sixth with a distance of 6.42 meters.

The Spartans' 4x800-meter relay team of senior Aidan DeSanto, senior Nicholas Knorz, sophomore Michael Hradesky and freshman Thomas Patton finished fifth in the event with a time of 7:58.17. Other scoring performances on Saturday came from senior Ben Whitman, who placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:45.46.

After one day of competition, the CWRU men sit in fifth place in the standings with 24 points. Washington leads the standings with 83 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon (61), and Chicago (43).

Case Western Reserve is in good position to add onto its team score on Sunday with nine athletes qualifying for finals, following their performances in preliminaries on Saturday.  Senior Andrew Ibibo earned a spot in the 400-meter dash after finishing third in the preliminaries with a time of 49.30, and earned a spot in the 200-meter dash after finishing fifth with a time of 22.53. Sophomore Jonathan Haling will be joining Ibibo in the finals of the 400-meter dash, following an eighth-place finish by Haling (50.19).

The Spartans will also have Oddo and senior Grant Mlack each in two events tomorrow. Oddo qualified for the 110-meter hurdles after finishing sixth with a time of 15.77 seconds, while Mlack finish seventh in the event with a time of 15.81 seconds. Oddo also qualified in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing sixth with a time of 57.11 seconds, while Mlack finished eighth in the event with a time of 57.25. Qualifying in the 100-meter dash was senior Ben Zelkin (seventh, 11.40) and qualifying in the 800-meter run was Hradesky (eighth, 1:56.89).
