Former NYU Track Runner Gordon McKenzie Passes Away

Former New York University track & field team member Gordon McKenzie passed away on Friday, July 19.
 
A 1955 graduate of NYU's School of Engineering, McKenzie was a National AAU Cross Country Champion in 1954 and his time of 29:28.1 established the American six-mile record.

In 2003, McKenzie was inducted into the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
McKenzie was a member of two United States Olympic teams, competing in the 10,000m at the1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He also represented the United States at six more international competitions.
 
A World War II veteran, McKenzie had a continued passion for track & field throughout his life. He served as a Nassau County Track & Field Official for 35 years, mentored young athletes and coached youth track & field teams. He was honored for his work as a leader in the Great Neck, NY, community in 2007 with a Proclamation of Appreciation from the Great Neck Board of Trustees for his more than 50 years of community service.
 
In 1984, McKenzie was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Hall of Fame.

McKenzie, 86, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Chris, their three children (Tina Bickerstaff, Adam McKenzie, Stuart McKenzie), his brother Thomas, and his seven grandchildren.
