Carnegie Mellon Tops the Track at First Meet at WVU

(MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team grabbed a couple top-three finishes at the West Virginia University Invitational Saturday, January 18.

Junior Eamon Cullinane (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) led the Tartans with a first-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:00.20.  Finishing just behind him at fifth and sixth place, respectively, were fellow juniors Joe Pane (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in 9:17.58 and Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in 9:20.58.

Carnegie Mellon continued their success, sweeping the 1000-meter run. Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) paced the group of runners crossing the finish line at 2:42.43 just ahead of the pack.  Fellow teammate and sophomore Thomas Mayo-Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye) closed just behind Julien to take second place with a time of 2:42.77. Rounding out the top three spots, senior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) crossed the line at 2:46.79.

Other top finishers on the track included senior Ken Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) who took third place in the mile run with a time of 4:27.88 and freshman Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) with a fifth place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:33.17. Norley closed in fifth place just before fellow teammate, junior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) who passed the line with a time of 4:33.34. 

Freshman Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) grabbed a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles leaning across the line as the time hit 8.80.

The final top times on the track came from junior Ben Walker (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) in the 800-meter run as he was at the head of the pack and able to finish the race in second place with a time of 2:05.17.  For the final event of the day the 4x400-meter relay team of Norley, Mayo-Smith, Julien, and Standish grabbed another second-place finish with a time of 3:33.37.

The field events were led by freshman Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) and senior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate).  Weaver grabbed a fourth-place finish in the pole vault hitting a height of 4.25m.

Erra-Hernandez led the throwers taking a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 14.74m. Junior Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and senior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) took fifth and sixth place, respectively, with marks of 14.40 and 14.12.

Saturday marked the first competition for the Tartans of the year.
