Pair of Record Setting Performances Highlight Eagles’ Weekend Meets

From Emory University Athletics

Program record-setting performances by freshman Shane Sullivan and freshman Max Brown highlighted the Eagles' Saturday at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama and the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Sullivan, competing at the Samford Invitational, set a new program record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:35.99, finishing 11th overall in the event at the meet. His time bested the previous school record of 8:37.77, set by Edward Mulder in 2013, and ranks as the second-fastest by a University Athletic Association competitor this season.

Also in action in Birmingham, Brown set a new program record in the 1,000-meter run, finishing fourth in the event with a time of 2:29.73, beating the previous school mark of 2:40.72, set by William Matheson in 2011.

Adding a standout performance at the meet was sophomore Grant Murphy, whose time of 4:14.84 in the mile run (en route to finishing second in the event) was the second-fastest in school history, the third fastest in the UAA this year, and the 34th-fastest in Division III.  Other top performances for the Emory men in Birmingham came from junior Spencer Koh in the pole vault (ninth, 4.20 meters), freshman Daniel Pietsch in the 400-meter dash (sixth, 49.18 seconds), and junior Josh Traynelis in the 800-meter run (20th, 1:59.51).

Junior Maxwell Hoberman was Emory's top finisher in three different events, winning the triple jump with a mark of 13.66 meters (the best in the UAA this season), finishing third in the long jump with a mark of 6.38 meters (fourth in the UAA) and claiming second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.19 seconds (fourth in the UAA).

The Emory men also had a number of other event winners, including senior James Bassen in the weight throw with a toss of 14.48 meters (second in the UAA, sixth in school history), senior Louis Mennel in the pole vault with a height of 3.35 meters, freshman Benjamin Rogin in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90 seconds and sophomore Brandon Cromer in the 800-meter run (2:04.05).
