NYU Takes Eighth at Armory

NYU Takes Eighth at Armory

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's track & field team competed at the Ramapo Roadrunner Indoor Tune-Up held on Friday, February 20, at the Armory in Manhattan.

The Violets approached this meet as a chance to test themselves in a competitive meet and possibly achieve missing qualifying marks for the upcoming University Athletic Association (UAA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Championships.

"Only a small contingent of the team competed today," noted Head Coach Will Boylan-Pett. "It was a fairly low-key meet overall, and we trained through it using it as a tune-up for upcoming big championships."

NYU took eighth place among 23 teams with a total of 19 points. The victory went to Connecticut College (228 points).

"We had strong middle-distance races," said Boylan-Pett. "Also, Tom Longabaugh did well in the pole vault. He is definitely getting his technique together. He and some other of our pole vaulters will be competing again on Sunday at Princeton."

Senior Sebastian Oja placed third in the mile race with a time of 4:25.02. Freshman Sam Praveen set a personal best of 4:29.91 for 10th place. Senior Steve Crnic, in his first mile race this season, took 12th with a time of 4:31.06.

"Sebastian wanted to race today, to kind of see where he was coming into the UAA's," said Boylan-Pett. "It wasn't his best time this season, but it was a strong race overall. At the UAA's he will most likely be running the 3,000m and distance medley relay."

HIGHLIGHTS:

Senior Longabaugh produced a hilghlight in the pole vault. He imporved his indoor personal best by 15cm, clearing the bar at 4.50m for fifth place. Other NYU pole vaulters had a good day, as well. "It was great seeing Isaac winning his heat," said Head Coach. "In his previous races, he was sometimes finding himself pushed to the back. Today, he got an opportunity to lead, and it's important that he was able to seize it."
