Washington Men’s Track & Field Wins UAA Indoor Title

The Washington University in St. Louis men's 1,600 relay won by a second to clinch the Bears' second University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track & Field Championship in a row by one point over host University of Chicago Sunday afternoon.

Trailing by one point entering the meet's final event, the WashU men's 1,600 relay team of juniors James Fitzhugh, Alex Bastian and Britt Henderson and senior Brendan Stone raced to a school-record time of 3:20.69 to win the event by .85 of a second over Chicago. The title in that event moved WashU past Chicago in the team standings, giving the Bears 114 points to the Maroons' 113. It secured WashU's 14thoverall and second straight UAA Indoor Championship, and the Bears' fifth title in the last six years.

In addition to the win in the 1,600 relay, the WashU men also had a first-place finish in the 60. Senior Nick Alaniva won the event with a time of 7.05. Bastain added a runner-up finish in the 800 with the second-fastest time in WashU history (1:54.95), while Henderson was fourth with a career-best time of 1:55.20. Stone added all-UAA honors with a third-place finish in the 400 in a career-best time of 49.81.

Senior Troy Makous and freshman Jacob Rother each earned all-UAA honors in the men's pole vault. Makous finished second with a clearance of 4.79 meters, while Rother cleared a career-best height of 4.54m to tie for third. Sophomore Mike Sullivan added a runner-up finish in the mile in a career-best time of 4:18.72, while senior Zach Lonneman picked up all-UAA honors with a third-place finish in the shot put with a career-best throw of 14.25m.

Junior Alex Arteaga (13.18m) and sophomore Mark Terng (13.12m) both posted career-bests to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's triple jump. Arteaga also finished fifth in the 60 hurdles (9.16) and sophomore Jack MacCarthy (10.32) took sixth. Junior Maisie Mahoney also earned team points for the WashU women in the high jump. She equaled her season-best with a clearance of 1.53m to finish sixth.
