Tartans Win Bob Shannon Invitational at Denison

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Denison University Bob Shannon Invitational on Saturday, February 6, winning the scored event with 139 points. Baldwin Wallace University was second with 124 points. The Tartans won five events while placing second in three.

Freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) won the long jump with a mark of 6.46 meters while senior Patrick Chang (Millbrae, Calif./Mills) was second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.36 meters and sophomore Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) was third with a jump of 12.31 meters. Sophomore Thomas Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) placed second in the pole vault with a vault of 4.27 meters. Sophomore David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) finished third in the shot put with a season-best mark of 14.39 meters while sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) threw the weight throw 14.68 meters to place fifth.

On the track, freshman Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) won the mile run in 4:27.64 with freshman Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) placing third in 4:37.27 and sophomore Andrew Bryan (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) crossing sixth in 4:39.48. Another win came in the 800-meter run when freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) finished the race in 1:58.37. In the same race, junior Brady Wilson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep (Wake Forest)) was fifth in 2:00.97.

Junior Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) placed third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.94 seconds. Freshman Christopher Bayley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) finished the 400-meter dash in fifth place after crossing the finish line in 53.09.

Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) brought home the victory in the 3,000-meter run with a meet record time of 8:40.58. Freshman William Mitchell (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) was fourth in the race in 8:55.56 with junior William Casazza (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) placing sixth in 9:22.65.

Freshman Liam Walsh (Needham, Mass./Needham) ran the 5,000-meter run in 15:39.56, finishing second.

The Tartans closed the meet with a significant win in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of Denison in second place. The team of sophomore Jonathan Perry (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), Wilson, Bayley and Wilson crossed the line in 3:30.96.
