Emory University head track and field coach John Curtin has announced the appointment of Luke Johnson as assistant coach.  His duties will primarily consist of coaching the Eagles' throwers.

Johnson joins the program after spending the 2016-17 season as a volunteer coach for the throwing events at the University of Georgia, working under assistant coach Don Babbitt.  In addition, he served a stint at the highly regarded Hoffa Throws Academy where, under the direction of three-time Olympian Reese Hoffa, he provided coaching to high school and middle school athletes in the discus and shot put. He also traveled to multiple high schools to put on day camps to help educate coaches and teach fundamentals of throwing.

"We are fortunate to have a talented young coach like Luke coming to our staff to work with our throwers," said Curtin.  "Luke is an outstanding thrower in his own right and comes to us with a background of working with the best in the country. Luke has trained under both Don Babbitt at UGA and Olympian Reese Hoffa at his academy.  He is excited to bring his energy and knowledge to our athletes.  We are thrilled to have him."

Johnson distinguished himself as a student-athlete while competing for the University of Minnesota track and field program from 2011-2016. Selected by his teammates to serve as captain for the 2015-16 season, he captured NCAA Indoor All-America honors in the shot put as a senior.  The Gophers' coaching staff voted him to be the initial recipient of the Roy Griak Award, symbolizing resilience and work ethic.

Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from Minnesota in 2016.
