WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University head coach of cross country and track and field John Evans has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the Fall 2013 semester. Assistant coach – and Evans' wife – Sinead Evans will remain with the program and serve as interim head coach of track and field.
"John Evans has been such a positive member of our staff for the last decade," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Lynne Dempsey. "He has brought quality student-athletes to the Judges' program over the years, both on the track and off. We will miss him and wish him well, but we are glad that we can keep the program in the family."
Evans has been Brandeis's head cross country and track coach since 2003-04 after serving as an assistant coach for two years before that. Evans has also worked at New Balance as a consultant since 1994.
"With my role at New Balance expanding, I felt that this was the time to focus my efforts there," Evans said. "This was a difficult decision, as I have loved every minute coaching at a great institution like Brandeis. I've worked with tremendous student-athletes over the years, hard workers and bright students. I will miss working with the Judges."
During his 10-year tenure, Evans has coached 11 individuals and one relay to All-America honors, most recently helping Amelia Lundkvist '14 to 21st place at the 2013 NCAA Division III Cross Country championships. He has sent four teams to the NCAA cross country championships, helping the men reach nationals from 2008 through 2010, while the women reached nationals this year for the first time since 2001. Evans has also coached 10 University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookies of the Year in his tenure, including Maddie Dolins '17 this year for women's cross country.
A 1989 graduate of Providence College, Evans was a three-time Big East and IC4A champion in several events and an All-American in the 1,500-meter run.
Sinead Evans has been an assistant for the Brandeis track and cross country programs for the past four years, joining the staff on a full-time basis in 2012. Working with the Judges' distance and middle-distance runners, she has helped eight Brandeis runners qualify for the NCAA track and field championships in those events, including Grayce Selig '11 and Chris Brown '12, who each established school records in the 1,500-meter run and earned All-America honors.
