New York University has announced the selection of Erison Hurtault as the new Head Coach of its men's and women's cross country and track & field teams. Hurtault recently wrapped up his second season as an assistant coach of those Violets quads.
Hurtault helped lead NYU to a successful season in 2015-16 as five Violets garnered All-America honors. Budd Brown finished in eighth place at the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, while the women's 4X400 relay team (Mary Conti, Ireland Gibson, Justina Sanders-Schifano, and Drew Washington) finished in fifth place at the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Additionally, Lily Corsaro finished in 29th place at the 2015 NCAA Atlantic Regional in cross country and earned a spot in the National Championship.
"I am thrilled that Erison Hurtault has accepted the position of Head Coach for NYU's cross country and track & field teams," said Christopher Bledsoe, NYU's Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "Coach Hurtault stepped in at a crucial time for NYU track & field this spring. We saw progress in the team room, on the track and in our meets and we expect it to continue."
A two-time Olympian, Hurtault represented the Commonwealth of Dominica in the 400 meters at both the Beijing (2008) and London (2012) Olympic Games.
"I'm excited and honored to have been chosen to head the New York University cross country and track & field programs," said Hurtault. "I'm thrilled to be the one to help bring the team to the next level. We had some bright spots that showed our potential as a team, and I look forward to helping our men and women realize that potenital."
A 2007 graduate of Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, Hurtault joined NYU after spending three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with his alma mater. Prior to his time with the Lions, Hurtault also spent three seasons serving in the same capacity with Florida State University.
Hurtault began competing professionally in 2007, focusing in the 400 meters. In addition to his participation in the two Olympic Games, he also competed in three World Championships (2009, 2011, 2014), finishing as a semifinalist in 2009 and 2011. Hurtault also competed in two Commonwealth Games (2010, 2014), finishing as a finalist in 2010.
Prior to his time in the professional ranks, Hurtault was an 11-time First Team All-Ivy League performer for the Lions. During his undergraduate career, Hurtault went undefeated within Ivy competition and was an eight-time champion in the 400 meters. As a senior, he served as a team captain, earned the Connie S. Maniatty Award as Columbia's Most Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete and earned NCAA Division I All-America honors for indoor and outdoor track & field.
A native of Aberdeen, NJ, Hurtault resides in New York City.
