NYU Competes at Metropolitan Championship

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's cross country team finished in eighth place at the Metropolitan Championship on Friday, October 13, at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets totaled 208 points in the 11-team race. Rutgers University won the competition with 39 points.

NYU was the only NCAA Division III team in the race.

"Today, we raced a lot of guys for the final couple of spots for the UAA Championship," explained Head Coach Erison Hurtault.

Benjamin Heintz was the Violets' first runner to cross the finish line, taking 39th place in a time of 27:44.7 over the five-mile course. Right behind was Julian Marrufo, who completed the distance in 41st place (27:50.2).

"We gave the opportunity to claim spots to UAA to the top two guys, so those two (Heintz and Marrufo) will most likely be going," Hurtault said.

Jonathan Sussman and Dillan Spector finished hip-to-hip for NYU, taking 47th place (27:57.8) and 48th place (27:58.6), respectively.

Rounding out the scoring for the Violets was Yuji Cusick, who finished in 53rd place (28:13.8).

Overall, 111 runners competed.

"We are off next week, so we'll look to sharpen up for our next competition at UAA," Hurtault concluded.
