Emory Finishes Second At NCAA South/Southeast Championships

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory men's cross country team recorded a second-place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships on Saturday. This year's competition was held at the Clara Bowl Course on the campus of Berry College. The squad's finish enabled it to claim an automatic bid to next Saturday's NCAA D-III Championships in Winnecone, Wisconsin.

Competing in a 33-team field, Emory registered 90 points, trailing only Rhodes College's total of 71 points. Berea was third with 107 points while Washington and Lee (121 pts.) and Christopher Newport (155 pts.) rounded out the top five.

All five of the Emory scorers ranked among the top 35 overall finishers, earning all-region honors in the process. Leading the pack for the second time this season was junior Luis Torres whose season-best 8K time of 26:05 was good for 10th place out of 239 runners. Sophomore Jack Whetstone scored for the fifth time in six meets this year, tying his personal best with a 26:15 that slotted him in the No. 15 position.

Senior Bennett Shaw was the third Emory finisher and 17th on the leader board with a season-best effort of 26:19, the fifth time he placed as a team scorer. Junior Sam Branson (26:25, 20th place) and sophomore Matt Dillon (26:36, 28th place) accounted the other scoring positions.  Also racing for the Eagles were Brett Lucas (27:14, 45th place) and Andrew Kliewer (27:31, 57th place).
