From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Cross Country Championship on its home course in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Saturday afternoon. The Tartans placed five runners in the top 15 to win the race by four points over Washington University in St. Louis. The meet victory marks the fifth time in school history the Tartans have won the UAA Championships and first since 2016.
Senior Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon), who finished third overall in a time of 25:04.78, led the Tartans. Classmate Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) crossed just under two seconds behind Kalapos in a time of 25:06.40 to place fourth. Junior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) was the third Tartan to cross and sixth overall runner, as he finished .35 seconds behind Yukevich in 25:06.75.
Crossing the line in fourth and fifth for the Cardinal and Gray were sophomore Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) and senior Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College) in times of 25:18.90 and 25:24.19, respectively. OBroin placed 12th overall while Goebel placed 14th.
Seniors Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) and Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) rounded out the Tartans' top seven, finishing in 20th and 22nd with times of 25:39.91 and 25:43.68.
Kalapos, Yukevich and Karee earned All-UAA First Team for their place while OBroin and Goebel garnered second-team honors.
Head coach Tim Connelly and assistant coach Adam Colorito were named UAA Men's Coaching Staff of the Year. The honor is the third for Connelly and his staff.
