Case Western Reserve University senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District VII Softball First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Lein now advances to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot.

A chemical engineering major with a 3.77 grade point average, Lein was named to the All-University Athletic Association First Team just yesterday.

She ranks sixth in the UAA with a team-best .415 batting average to go along with three home runs, eight doubles, a team-high 32 RBI and 11 stolen bases. She was named UAA Hitter of the Week on April 7 and earned UAA All-Academic honors for the third season in a row.

One of the finest shortstops to ever suit up for Case Western Reserve, Lein is a career .338 hitter with 12 home runs, 43 doubles and 98 RBI. She is the program's all-time leader in both career hits (172) and runs scored (125), and she ranks fourth in starts (160), second in doubles, fourth in homers and fourth in RBI.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception, a total of 80 Case Western Reserve student-athletes have been named Academic All-American®. That number includes 21 combined over the past four-plus academic years.

Lein and the Spartans concluded the regular season with an overall record of 25-15. The team's 25 wins are the fourth most in program history behind the totals from 2012 (26-15), 1999 (25-9) and 2001 (31-10).
