From Emory University Athletics
The No. 16-ranked Emory softball squad proved that it has been
just as successful off the field as well as on it with four players
earning berths on the Capital One Academic All-District Team.
Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the
College Sports Information Directors of America. Emory's
representatives are District 5 selections from Division III
institutions comprised from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,
Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee
and Virginia.
Representing the Eagles on the 13-member team are
seniors Megan Light (Atlanta), Amanda
Kardys (Union, NJ), Claire Bailey (Henrico, VA)
and Lauren Gorodetsky (Palm City, FL). It is the
second straight year that all four have been chosen as academic
all-district honorees.
The honor is awarded annually to student athletes who have
excelled both academically and athletically. To be eligible,
a nominee must have reached sophomore academic and athletic
standing at his/her current institution, carry a cumulative
grade-point average of 3.3 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) and be a
starter or key reserve.
Light, who majors in Anthropology/Human Biology, claims a 3.96
GPA. Earlier this week, the four-year veteran, was named the
University Athletic Association's Most Valuable Player for the
third time in her career, and claimed her fourth berth on the
All-UAA First Team, just the second player in program history to
earn that distinction. She leads Division III with a school
season record of 16 homers and has driven in a program record-tying
61 runs. She ranks third nationally in both RBIs per game
(1.49) and slugging percentage (1.008). Last season,
Light was a Second Team Academic All-American.
Kardys has been a workhorse on the Eagles' pitching staff, crafting
a won-lost ledger of 24-1 with her win total the second-highest
seasonal mark in school annals. Kardys, tabbed to the All-UAA
Second Team earlier this week, has tossed a conference-leading 167
1/3 innings (sixth on Eagles' seasonal ladder) and posts an ERA of
2.64. She has fanned 82 opposing batters and registered seven
shutouts and 14 complete games. A double major in Biology and
Psychology, Kardys sports a GPA of 3.84. A year ago,
Kardys was selected as a First Team Academic All-American.
Bailey, a Biology major, has a glittering GPA of 3.94. A Capital One Second Team Academic All-American in 2012 and now three-time Academic All-District honoree, Bailey has started all 42 of games she has appeared in. She is hitting a career-high .387 and has knocked in 19 runs. She ranks second on the team and third in the UAA with 43 runs scored. Her .500 on-base percentage is second on the club and fourth among league performers.
Gorodetsky, a three-time member on the Academic All-District Team, has started 39 of 40 contests and checks in with a .381 effort at the plate with 37 hits in 97 at-bats. She has stolen a team-high 17 bases with that mark third on the UAA ladder. She has crossed the plate 32 times, fifth on the squad, and has produced nine multi-hit outings this year. Career-wise, she is No. 2 on the school's all-time list with 66 stolen bases, one shy of tying for first. A double major in Psychology and Political Science, she has a GPA of 3.87. She is no stranger to receiving academic honors, having been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this year.
