Two members of the Emory University softball program have been
named to the 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)
Division III All-America Team. The announcement was made
Wednesday evening in at the Harley Convention Center in Tyler,
Texas, the sight of the NCAA D-III Championships.
Senior first baseman Megan Light (Atlanta, GA)
and sophomore Hannah Sendel (Greenwood Village, CO) were
the Eagles' representatives, with Light earning first-team
accolades and Sendel a second-team berth.
A starter in all 46 of the games she appeared in, Light ended the
season with a .463 hitting mark, good for second place among
University Athletic Association players (through May 19),
collecting a league-high tying 68 hits (tied for second on Emory's
seasonal list) in 147 trips to the plate. She leads the UAA
and currently stands second among all D-III players with a
school-season record of 19 home runs, finishing her four-year
career as the program's all-time leader with 47 round
trippers. She topped the squad by driving in a school record
65 runs and her 56 runs scored also paced the both the team and the
league. The Eagles' leader in multi-hit (22) and multi-RBI
(17) games, her .986 slugging percentage paces the UAA and ranks
fourth nationally. She totaled a league-high 145 total bases,
good for the No. 1 spot on Emory's seasonal chart. Earlier in
the season, she was named the UAA's Most Outstanding Player for the
third time in her career while capturing her fourth berth on the
All-UAA First Team. Light becomes the program's first
three-time All-American and the only player to have garnered
first-team acclaim on two occasions.
One of two Emory players to have started all 48 contests, Sendel
wound up the year hitting .404 (59-of-146) with that effort ranking
eighth on the UAA ladder (through May 19). One of the more
potent bats in the Eagles' lineup, Sendel smacked 14 home runs,
currently tied for second in the league and good for the No. 2
position on the program's seasonal chart. She drove in 59
runs, second in the conference and on the Emory seasonal list, and
ended up with a slugging percentage of .829 that is third among UAA
players and 29th nationally. Sendel finished
out the 2014 campaign with a seven-game hitting streak that saw her
compile a .523 mark (11-of-21) at the plate with seven RBIs in that
stretch. She was second on the team in both multi-hit (17)
and multi-RBI (17) games. Sendel was a First Team All-UAA
honoree and was selected to the All-UAA Tournament Team.
Emory ended the 2014 season with an overall record of 39-9 and
advanced to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Championships.
