From University of Rochester Athletics
University of Rochester seniors Nina Korn and Tayler Fravel have
been named to the 2014 All-America Softball Team by the National
Fastpitch Coaches Association. Korn was named a First Team
All-American. Fravel was named to the Third Team.
Korn is a Rochester native who played scholastically at Greece
Athena High School. She has four varsity letters for softball.
Fravel is finishing her second season at Rochester. She played
softball for two years at Tompkins Community College, earning
junior college All-America honors there in each year. She
transferred to Rochester in January, 2013, and started at third
base last season. She is a native of Sandy Creek, NY and played
scholastically at Sandy Creek HS.
The announcement was made at the NCAA Division III Softball
Championships pre-game banquet on Wednesday evening. Rochester is
making its first finals appearance and its fifth NCAA playoff
appearance overall in the 17-year-history of the program.
The women, who form the right side of Rochester's infield –
Korn at first base, Fravel at second base – were named First
Team All-Region by the NFCA earlier this spring. Rochester had four
All-Region players: Korn, Fravel, and junior Brittany Grage
(Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) on the First Team, freshman Eleni
Wechsler (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) on the Second Team.
Korn and Fravel are the third and fourth Rochester softball players
to earn All-America accolades. Outfielder Jessica Sorrentino was
selected in 2008. Pitcher Beth Ameno was chosen in 2009. Both
Sorrentino and Ameno were Third Team All-Americans.
In all, 15 Rochester athletes have been recognized as All-Americans
this year, covering five sports. Two Rochester women are competing
at the Division III Track and Field national championships this
week. Superior performances could result in All-America honors for
them. (Cameron Edwards in the 400 intermediate hurdles, Emily
VanDenburgh in the long jump).
