Spartans Tied for First Place After Day Two of UAA Championship

The Case Western Reserve University softball team went 2-0 on day two of the University Athletic Association Championship outscoring Brandeis University 9-7 and No. 19 University of Rochester 5-2.

CWRU improves to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the UAA, tying them for first place in the championship thus far. Brandeis is now 4-2, 1-3 UAA and Rochester moves to 5-2, 3-1 UAA.

In the first game against Brandeis, the Spartans fell behind 2-0 in the first inning. The Spartans rallied back with two runs in the third on a home run from freshman outfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel). 

In the top of the fifth, the Spartans added three more runs to retake the lead, 5-4. Senior Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) doubled to centerfield, bringing in two runs. Freshman Maren Waldner (Redondo Beach, Calif./Chadwick) reached first due to an error by the Judge's second baseman and Roberts scored on the play.

The Spartans fell behind 7-5 before plating four runs in the sixth inning. Freshman infielder Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) doubled to left field bringing in a run. Senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) earned an RBI with a base hit to shortstop. Roberts singled to right field to score two runs and break the tie.

Against Rochester, the Spartans jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Tritchler doubled to right field to drive in the first run. After Tritchler stole second base, she scored on a double to left field by senior Rebecca Taylor.

With the Spartans leading 2-1 in the fifth inning, O'Brien singled down the right field line. Senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to left center to score O'Brien.

Junior outfielder Abbey Filliez (Canton, Ohio/Perry) smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Spartans their fourth and fifth runs.
